Assistant memory can remove repetitive setup, but it also changes the privacy model. Information that was useful for one conversation may influence later answers or remain available longer than the user expects.

Good uses for memory

Stable preferences are the safest candidates: writing tone, measurement units, preferred programming language or a recurring project description that contains no confidential material. These details save time without exposing customer records or credentials.

Memory is less suitable for temporary facts. Deadlines, prices, team roles and product settings can become outdated and silently reduce answer quality.

Information that should stay out

Do not store passwords, API keys, recovery phrases, private correspondence, health records, payment information or confidential business data. Redaction is still necessary even when the assistant advertises security controls.

For workplace use, separate personal and company accounts. Confirm retention, training and administrator-access rules before placing internal material in any AI workspace.

A practical review routine

Review saved memories periodically, remove obsolete entries and test whether the assistant behaves correctly without them. Prefer project-scoped instructions when a preference should not affect unrelated conversations.

Memory should reduce setup work, not become an invisible source of truth. Important decisions still need explicit context and current evidence in the conversation.
