The custody decision is a tradeoff between control and operational responsibility. Moving bitcoin away from an exchange removes one class of counterparty risk but introduces the possibility of losing, exposing or mishandling recovery material.

Understand the exchange model

An exchange manages keys, account recovery and transaction infrastructure. The user depends on its solvency, security, withdrawal policies and identity controls. Account access can also be affected by phishing, SIM attacks or compromised email.

Exchange custody may be practical for active trading or small balances, but it should not be confused with direct control of the asset.

Understand self-custody

Self-custody gives the holder control of signing keys and transaction decisions. It requires a verified wallet setup, protected backups, tested recovery and a plan for device failure or inheritance.

A hardware wallet cannot protect against every mistake. Users can still approve a malicious transaction, reveal a recovery phrase or send to the wrong address.

Choose by risk, not identity

Consider value, transaction frequency, technical ability, physical security and the consequences of temporary or permanent loss. Some people use more than one custody method to separate operating funds from long-term holdings.

Test with a small amount and document recovery before increasing exposure. Never enter a recovery phrase into a website or share it with support.
