Meta

The term “meta” generally refers to something that is self-referential or concerned with its own category or nature. In discussions about media, art, or technology, “meta” often describes when a work comments on itself or the conventions of its medium-for example, a movie about making movies. In a broader sense, it can also mean “beyond” or “at a higher level,” such as in “metadata” (data about data).
