The term **darknet** refers to a portion of the internet that is intentionally hidden and not accessible through standard search engines or browsers. It typically requires special software, configurations, or authorization to access—such as the Tor network. The darknet is often used to preserve anonymity and privacy; however, it can also host both legitimate and illicit activities, such as private communication, whistleblowing platforms, or black markets.
