Software independence is a property of a voting system whereby an undetected change or error in the software cannot cause an undetectable change or error in the election outcome. In other words, even if the software is faulty, compromised, or tampered with, the accuracy of the reported results can still be independently verified through other means, such as a voter-verified paper audit trail or manual audit processes.
