"Skunk works" refers to a small, loosely structured group within an organization that is given a high degree of autonomy to work on advanced or innovative projects, often with the goal of achieving rapid development or breakthrough results. The term originated with Lockheed Martin’s Advanced Development Programs, which used the name “Skunk Works” for its pioneering aircraft design team.
