Schleswig-Holstein is the northernmost federal state (Bundesland) of Germany, located between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. It shares a border with Denmark to the north and with the German states of Lower Saxony, Hamburg, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to the south. Its capital city is Kiel. The region has a complex history, having been contested between Denmark and Germany before becoming part of Germany in the 19th century.
