In astronomy and related sciences, **dex** is a shorthand term meaning a difference of one **order of magnitude**, or a factor of 10, on a logarithmic scale. It is derived from "decimal exponent." For example, a value that is 1 dex higher than another is 10 times larger, and 0.3 dex corresponds to roughly a factor of 2.
