The **Dencun upgrade** is a major Ethereum network upgrade that combines two earlier upgrade names: *Deneb* (for the consensus layer) and *Cancun* (for the execution layer). Implemented in 2024, it introduces *proto‑danksharding* (EIP‑4844), which adds a new transaction type carrying "blobs" of data. This mechanism significantly reduces layer‑2 rollup costs by providing cheaper, temporary data storage, improving Ethereum’s scalability and throughput.
