Taiwan Plans to Establish a National Bitcoin Reserve

Taiwan is preparing to follow the United States in exploring a government-backed Bitcoin reserve. Prime Minister Cho Jung-tai announced that a comprehensive report on the inclusion of confiscated crypto assets in state reserves will be released before the end of the year.

A Strategic Shift Toward Digital Assets

According to Cho, the government will conduct a six-month risk-benefit assessment on adding cryptocurrencies — primarily Bitcoin — to Taiwan’s sovereign holdings. The analysis will also include proposals for legislative amendments required to authorize such a reserve.

The initiative follows growing international interest in treating Bitcoin as a strategic asset. The United States set the precedent earlier this year when President Donald Trump signed an executive order to create a federal crypto reserve, partly funded by confiscated digital assets seized in criminal investigations.

Economic and Regulatory Implications

For Taiwan, the move could signal a broader pivot toward financial modernization and digital transparency. Analysts note that incorporating Bitcoin into national reserves might diversify holdings while providing exposure to an asset uncorrelated with fiat currencies or traditional bonds.

However, the plan also raises questions about volatility management, taxation, and custody security. The upcoming report will outline potential frameworks for storage — including whether the Central Bank of the Republic of China or a newly formed digital-asset authority will manage the reserve.

Global Context

Taiwan’s interest reflects a growing geopolitical pattern: nations seeking autonomy from dollar-denominated reserves are increasingly turning to digital alternatives. If implemented, this would make Taiwan one of the first Asian economies to formalize Bitcoin holdings as part of its state reserve policy.
