Taiwan Opens 7-Eleven X-STORE 9 - a Fully Autonomous Grab-and-Go Retail Experience

Taiwan has unveiled its ninth fully autonomous 7-Eleven X-STORE, located at National Central University in Taoyuan. The new concept store operates without staff, cash registers, or barcode scanning, marking another step forward in AI-powered retail innovation.

AI Vision Enables Seamless Grab-and-Go Checkout

The store uses a pure AI vision system developed by Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute. Unlike earlier autonomous retail models, X-STORE 9 does not rely on weight sensors or shelf pressure plates. Instead, more than 140 ceiling cameras combined with LiDAR units track customer movement, map skeletal posture, and detect when items are picked up or returned.

Shoppers simply take the products they want and walk out. The system automatically processes payment in around 30 seconds, eliminating queues entirely and removing the need to scan barcodes.

A Cost-Efficient and Scalable Retail Model

By operating solely on multidimensional AI image analysis, X-STORE 9 dramatically reduces hardware requirements compared to typical autonomous store designs. This lowers installation costs and makes large-scale deployment more feasible, especially in high-traffic environments like universities.

6000 Products and an Automated Parcel Micro-Warehouse

Despite its modest 82 m² footprint, the store maintains an assortment of roughly 6000 items. It also features Taiwan’s first automated parcel micro-warehouse: customers enter pickup details on a screen, and a robotic system retrieves the package within two to four minutes.

Universities Lead the Adoption Curve

Five of Taiwan’s nine X-STOREs are located on university campuses. Operators say younger consumers adapt more quickly to autonomous shopping flows, making educational institutions ideal testbeds for next-generation retail technology.

Conclusion

The launch of 7-Eleven X-STORE 9 signals rapid maturation in AI-driven retail. With no staff, no sensors on shelves and fully automated checkout and parcel logistics, Taiwan continues to position itself at the forefront of real-world AI deployment in consumer environments.
