Sony to Introduce Cross-Buy for Unified PlayStation 5 and PC Ownership

Sony is preparing to launch Cross-Buy — a new feature that allows players to purchase a game once and access it across both PlayStation 5 and PC. The initiative marks a major step toward unifying the company’s gaming ecosystem and directly challenges Microsoft’s Xbox Play Anywhere program.

A single purchase for two platforms

According to early reports, Cross-Buy will enable users to link their PlayStation Network and PC accounts, giving them ownership of both versions of compatible games. The system would eliminate the need to buy separate copies, aligning Sony’s approach with the increasingly cross-platform nature of modern gaming.

Mentions of a new “crossbuy-tag” have already been spotted in the PlayStation Store code, suggesting that the feature is in active development. Developers are expected to receive documentation and integration tools ahead of the official rollout.

Sony’s response to Xbox Play Anywhere

Cross-Buy is seen as Sony’s answer to Microsoft’s Xbox Play Anywhere, introduced in 2016, which lets players purchase titles once and play them seamlessly on Xbox and Windows PCs. With more PlayStation exclusives arriving on PC — including God of War, Spider-Man, and Horizon — Sony’s adoption of a unified ownership model seems like a logical next step.

Industry analysts note that the move could strengthen PlayStation’s brand loyalty while attracting PC gamers who previously hesitated to invest in Sony’s ecosystem. It also signals a broader shift toward platform neutrality, where gamers can focus on content rather than hardware limitations.

What it means for players

If implemented, Cross-Buy could redefine how PlayStation users build their digital libraries. It would make cross-platform gaming more accessible, reduce duplicate spending, and simplify game management across devices.

Although Sony has not announced a launch date, insiders suggest the feature could debut alongside upcoming PSN-PC integration updates planned for early 2026.

For millions of PlayStation fans, Cross-Buy represents not just a convenience, but a long-awaited acknowledgment that the future of gaming is cross-platform — and Sony is finally embracing it.
