MotionStream: Real-Time AI Video Generation With Motion Control​


A collaboration between Adobe Research, Carnegie Mellon University, and Seoul National University has given rise to MotionStream — the world’s first AI system capable of generating videos with interactive motion control in real time. This technology pushes the boundaries of creative video generation by allowing users to guide object movement, camera direction, and scene dynamics as the footage renders live.

A new frontier in real-time video AI​


MotionStream represents a major leap in AI video generation. While traditional systems rely on pre-rendered keyframes or batch processing, MotionStream introduces a continuous real-time generation loop that reacts instantly to user input. With this, artists and researchers can manipulate trajectories, apply camera panning, or even transfer motion patterns between subjects — all in one uninterrupted stream.

Performance metrics: fast, fluid, and scalable​


The system operates on a single NVIDIA H100 GPU, achieving an impressive 29 frames per second with just 0.4 seconds of latency. It can generate videos of infinite length without slowdown, maintaining a stable frame rate and temporal consistency throughout.

According to the research team, MotionStream performs roughly 100 times faster than existing motion-controlled video generation systems. This performance boost stems from its hybrid architecture combining a diffusion-based frame generator with a real-time motion encoder and an optimized feedback controller that predicts object dynamics as users draw trajectories.


Interactive creativity and potential applications​


MotionStream enables a completely new creative workflow. Users can literally “paint” motion on screen — sketching paths, rotating perspectives, or controlling zoom and object focus. The AI responds instantly, producing coherent visuals that align with the user’s drawn motion and camera cues.

Open-source prospects and research status​


Currently, MotionStream’s source code remains under internal review at Adobe. While the team has expressed interest in releasing it as open source, official timelines have not yet been announced. The accompanying research paper, published on arXiv, details the algorithmic principles and experimental setup used to achieve real-time generation on a single GPU.

If open-sourced, MotionStream could redefine AI video editing — merging the creative spontaneity of real-time control with the precision of procedural animation.
