Monero Prepares Its Largest Privacy Upgrade With FCMP++​


The Monero network is approaching the most significant privacy upgrade in its history. The upcoming Full-Chain Membership Proofs++ protocol, known as FCMP++, represents a fundamental shift in how transaction anonymity is achieved on the network.

From Ring Signatures to Full-Chain Privacy​

Since its launch in 2014, Monero has relied on ring signatures to obfuscate transaction senders. Each transaction was hidden among a limited set of possible outputs, creating a fixed anonymity set of 16 potential senders.

FCMP++ replaces this approach entirely. Instead of hiding a transaction among a small group, it proves that the sender belongs to the entire blockchain history.


Anonymity Set Expands to the Entire Network​

Under FCMP++, every transaction is indistinguishable from more than 150 million historical outputs. This means a transaction is effectively hidden among all transactions ever created on the Monero blockchain.

The anonymity set no longer grows incrementally. It becomes global and permanent.


How FCMP++ Works​

The protocol is built using generalized Bulletproofs, curve trees, and elliptic divisor techniques developed by cryptographer Liam Eagen.

These components enable efficient zero-knowledge proofs that confirm membership without revealing which output is actually being spent.


Forward Secrecy and Quantum Resistance​

FCMP++ introduces forward secrecy at the protocol level. Even if future quantum computers are able to break elliptic curve cryptography, past FCMP++ transactions would remain unlinkable and anonymous.

This marks a critical step toward long-term privacy preservation in a post-quantum environment.


Backward Compatibility Preserved​

Despite the architectural overhaul, FCMP++ maintains full backward compatibility. Existing Monero addresses, including the current 95-character format, will continue to function without forced migration.

Adoption of the new format will be optional, allowing gradual network transition.


Development Timeline​

The first public testnet for FCMP++ launched on October 3, 2025, at block height 2,847,330. A public beta release is expected in the first quarter of 2026.

If successful, FCMP++ will redefine privacy guarantees across the entire cryptocurrency landscape.
