Ethereum Foundation Launches Interop Layer to Unite All L2 Networks

Ethereum Interop Layer unifying all L2 networks into a single ecosystem

Ethereum Foundation Introduces Interop Layer to Unify the Entire L2 Ecosystem

The Ethereum Foundation has announced the Interop Layer, a new protocol designed to combine all Layer-2 networks into a unified user experience. As the number of L2 rollups continues to grow, fragmentation has made navigation difficult for both developers and everyday users. The Interop Layer addresses this challenge by allowing all major Ethereum L2s to operate as if they were parts of a single chain.

A Solution to L2 Fragmentation

The Interop Layer acts as a connective architecture that enables seamless communication between Layer-2 networks. Instead of manually switching networks, handling different gas tokens, or maintaining separate balances on each chain, users can interact with any supported rollup through one interface. Transactions are automatically routed across chains, creating a unified Ethereum environment without bridges or additional steps from the user.

One Wallet for All Rollups

A core benefit of the Interop Layer is the ability to conduct cross-chain operations with a single transaction. Wallets become universal access points for the entire Ethereum rollup ecosystem. Whether users are interacting with DeFi, NFTs, or dApps, the Interop Layer ensures their actions can span multiple chains without requiring network changes or manual bridging.

Designed to Strengthen the Broader Ecosystem

For developers, the Interop Layer removes the complexity of integrating multiple Layer-2 networks. dApps can support a wide range of L2s through a single system, dramatically reducing engineering overhead. This allows teams to focus on application logic rather than maintaining separate infrastructure for each rollup.

Testnet Already Available

The protocol is already available for testing, giving developers and advanced users an early opportunity to explore cross-L2 interactions. According to the Foundation, the Interop Layer aims to significantly improve the efficiency of DeFi services and other applications that rely on interoperability between chains.

Toward a Unified Ethereum Experience

The launch of the Interop Layer represents a major step toward Ethereum’s vision of a unified multi-rollup ecosystem. By enabling a single-chain experience across all Layer-2 networks, the protocol may dramatically lower barriers for adoption and set the foundation for a more seamless Web3 future.
