Android Studio Adds Gemini AI Interface Generation from Screenshots

Google has introduced a new AI-driven feature in Android Studio Otter 2025.2.1 that allows developers to automatically generate and edit user interfaces directly from screenshots.

From image to functional code

The new “Generate Code From Screenshot” option uses the Gemini AI model to analyze an uploaded image and instantly create a Jetpack Compose layout replicating the visual structure. Developers can then edit, refine, or adapt the generated code as needed.

This feature saves hours of manual layout work and lowers the barrier for rapid prototyping. It also allows developers to transform design mockups or existing app screenshots into working UIs within seconds — all without leaving Android Studio.

Design adaptation through AI

In addition to direct code generation, Gemini can now adapt an interface design based on a reference screenshot. A developer may write a rough draft of a screen layout, then upload the target design image — the AI automatically adjusts the code to match spacing, colors, and component hierarchy.

The system uses multimodal perception to recognize layout patterns, iconography, and design semantics, enabling smart transformation rather than pixel-by-pixel copying.

A step forward for Android development

The integration of Gemini AI within Android Studio reflects Google’s broader goal of embedding intelligent agents across its developer ecosystem. The tool demonstrates how generative models are now being used not just for code completion, but for entire UI creation and refinement loops.

Industry experts say such features mark the beginning of a new workflow paradigm — where developers collaborate with AI to turn ideas, sketches, and screenshots into deployable interfaces in minutes.
